Hebden Bridge and West Yorkshire

West Yorkshire - big skies lovely walking

The area we walki is largely in Calderdale -a special part of  West Yorkshire. Few places offer this blend of beauty and history in such a small place. Hebden Bridge, Halifax, Ripponden and Todmorden are vibrant market towns in the beautiful borough of Calderdale. Enjoy stunning countryside and waterways, amazing architecture, an abundance of great, independent shops, adrenalin sports, fantastic food and drink,

Hebden Bridge is on the Yorkshire side of the Pennine Hills. Not long ago, it was a small mill town producing wool and woollen goods. By the end of the sixties, the town was in bad shape. Shops were empty and blocks of terraced houses were being pulled down.

During the seventies and eighties the town was repopulated by a motley mixture of artists, writers, photographers, musicians, alternative practitioners, teachers, green and New Age activists and more recently, wealthier yuppy types. The area has a rich literary history. The Bronte sisters wrote their famous novels just a few miles away in Haworth, the American poet, Sylvia Plath is buried at Heptonstall on the hill overlooking Hebden Bridge and the poet laureate, Ted Hughes was born in Mytholmroyd, two miles away.

Hebden Bridge is an obvious destination for those wanting to escape the cities because life here can be a fine mixture of the urban and rural. The water from the hills powered the first mills of the Industrial Revolution. Yet, ten minutes from the town centre and you can be walking alone by the river in one of the many wooded valleys. A half an hour's walk uphill and you can be rambling across heather moorland.

It's is a walkers paradise

Around Hebden Bridge there are many valleys that lead up to airy moorlands. We walk through these as we explore the West Yorkshire scenery around the town. Water plays an important part in shaping this landscape so expect that we will see many streams tumbling down from the hills.

What Others Said...

Nicky Price, Northern Lakes – July 2021. I LOVED the guided walking experience! Alvina was just brilliant, such a great walking leader. She was completely aware of our abilities at all times, aware of safety etc but also fun and knew so much about the local area. She adapted the walks according to the heat and our abilities/levels of fatigue etc. She was just brilliant at what she does. It was great to meet the other leaders too, Bridget and Gill were great. I really enjoyed chatting to them along the way. They all made it clear that no-one needed to rush, they were happy to go at a slower pace if necessary and put everyone at their ease. The hotel was great. I wished there was air con in the room as it was SO hot that week - but the weather that week was exceptional for the Lake District. Food was great at the hotel, room was comfortable, nice to have drinks outside in the evening. The staff were great, really friendly and helpful. Everything went smoothly, it was all very straight forward and I had a BRILLIANT holiday! I am already looking at booking another holiday…thank you for an amazing few days, I thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a great group of people, everyone got along so well. The weather was AMAZING and we enjoyed a few dips in the Lakes which really made the holiday extra special!
